X. 766 To CJ. from R.{Sir Henry Royce} c. to HS.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} R2/M13.9.24. RE. HEATING OF WATER. X. 766. I agree with your CJ2/E12.9.24. We propose doing all that is reasonably possible, and which shews a definite improvement, and then being content, and not do anything foolish. With fair management and knowledge we ought only to hear of the remaining troubles very occasionally. (1) Increased exit for air (louvred bonnet etc.). (2) More efficient fan (i.e. easier to drive - improved drive). (3) Such increase in face area that is possible without involving impractical construction or ugly appearance, and excessive weight and cost. You will remember that from time to time we have fitted louvres and shutters on our standard, but not always used by even our own cars. That I have always resisted attempting to drive the fan faster because it would be less reliable, and more often slower. The face area of the radiator has been gradually increasing as in other cars, but gets checked by appearance, etc. The efficiency all round is good - better than others - but we should get considerable improvement from an aircraft fan.
