- 3 - HPS{Horace Percy Smith - Experimental Factory Mgr}/RH.{R. Hollingworth}1/VS.{J. Vickers}3.6.37. Cylinder Heads (Continued). guides which were .0013" oval at the top. Valves and Fittings LOP.E.86922. LeC.4905-5241. Inlet Valves E.88165. In S/SLV. Exhaust Valves E.88447 in KE.965 Stellited. The latter valves despatched 1. 3. 37 - mileage 12,500. The inlet valves were in good condition and free from pitting and cracks. The wear on the stems was in most cases nil and in the worst cases only .0002". Wear on the seats was normal for the mileage. The exhaust valves, however, in spite of their shorter mileage, were in poor condition. All the seats were pitted and five were badly burnt. The stems, on which wear appeared to be normal, showed a distinct tendency to pick-up at the bottom. No valves were cracked. The bottom tappets (standard Fescolised) were in good condition and wear on the camshaft was normal for the mileage. Oil Level Indicator LOP.E.85050 LeC.4352. This was in good condition throughout. Idler Gear LOP.E.86994. LeC.4433. The backlash in this gear was found to be .022" measured at the pitch-circle, between the idler and dynamo pinion. This is the worst case of wear yet reported by us in Phantom III Idler Gears. Water Pump LOP.E.87052 . LeC.4545-4919. The rotor-blades had apparently fouled the pump-casing at some time, but not recently. The thrust pad was worn .026" but the spindle and bearings were in good condition, also the glands. continued. | ||
