X4290 To HS.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} from R.{Sir Henry Royce} c. to CJ. BJ. RG.{Mr Rowledge} DA.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} PN.{Mr Northey} H.{Arthur M. Hanbury - Head Complaints} S E C R E T. E.A.C. AND GOSHAWK. X.4240 RADIATORS. X.9250 The matter of thermostat versus hand control of the louvres on radiators has been reconsidered with PN.{Mr Northey} and H.{Arthur M. Hanbury - Head Complaints} and the conclusions arrived at here are confirmed, that we should continue to fit the hand control and thermometers to all cars, both 20 HP. and 40/50. It is understood that though the thermostat has some advantages, it is generally speaking a safer policy to adopt hand control. An advantage the hand control has both for cooling and remaining hot is that it can anticipate. This particularly applies when we have the exhaust heated throttle, in which case it is not so important to keep the cooling water so near the maximum, i.e. when in hot weather etc. there might be the risk of boiling, the louvres can be set full open all the time.
