TO BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} FROM DA.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} c. to CJ. Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}✓ ORIGINAL GOSHAWK EXHAUST CUTOUT. X4269 We send herewith N.sch. 1304 shewing the proposed exhaust cutout fitted to the Goshawk silencer. It will be noticed that a new front silencer end is required and that the presence [handwritten: position] of the diaphragms inside the silencer are altered. We also require some facings adding to the gearbox to support the operating shaft but the existing gearboxes can be used by cleaning up the outside face and using packing. With the exception of the alteration to the front end and diaphragms of the silencer, the exhaust system is unaltered. With reference to the material for the valve this would depend on the result of experiment. It is suggested that we should start with the same materials as we now use on the 40/50. It will be noticed that we have left off the perforated nozzles leading into and out of the silencer as Mr. Royce considers them an unnecessary expense. We have an idea however that without these nozzles the system was found unduly noisy. If so perhaps the necessary throttling can be obtained by the holes in the diaphragms. This arrangement is also experimental and production is not intended to be delayed for it at all. Da.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} [STAMP: H.R. DEPT. 25 JUN 1922] | ||
