Notes on 20 HP Chassis. concerned, my recommendation is as follows: That we immediately order material for a further batch of 200 chassis of the same type as the 150 now in hand, leaving it open for the moment whether these chassis have the turbulent head or not, this depending on the result of further tests yet to be carried out, and also leaving open the question of the introduction of some of the other modifications referred to in R's memo. under Item 17., the introduction of which would depend on the ability of the Experimental Department to bring the experiments through satisfactorily in time to enable the features to be introduced. It is also agreed by the Sales officials that in regard to further material beyond the 200 referred to, it would be unwise to introduce the longer wheel base chassis without slightly increasing the size of the engine as suggested in my memorandum to R.{Sir Henry Royce} of the 27th ult. This is because the increase in length of the chassis must necessarily slightly increase the weight of the chassis and must also mean a little extra weight on bodies, if only due to the added length of the chassis frame. On this whole question of bodies I would like to make it clear that we in reality only control a very small percentage of the bodies which are fitted to our chassis. It is certain that if we limit our sales to 4-seaters the sale of the 20 HP will very considerably decrease, whereas what we are trying to work out is how we can increase the sales by two or three per week. | ||
