To Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Swdl.{Len H. Swindell}6/JH.19.8.37. PHANTOM II EXHAUST VALVES. The position of the lightening of valves to overcome noise as carried out by G.W.H. is reviewed as follows :- (1) Is the noise question overcome by lightening the balves (E.85505), or the fact that in conjunction with reducing the stems, new guides are fitted? (2) Is advantage taken of lightening the valves by fitting weaker valve springs? (3) That by reducing the valve head as GWH.{George W. Hancock - Head Chateauroux} has carried out we go back to a section as previously used and which failed in several cases. (4) That if GWH.{George W. Hancock - Head Chateauroux} is correct in stating that the lightening of the valves cures the noise then By.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} is only going halfway in his suggestion of reducing the stem dia., but retaining the heavy strengthened head. (5) We have asked By.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} to hold up his suggestion pending further information from GWH.{George W. Hancock - Head Chateauroux} (6) That the nearest approach to GWH{George W. Hancock - Head Chateauroux}'s. lightened valve is to (E.85640) which ran without failure over the 10,000 miles in 28-EX. This valve however was in KE.965 as compared with S/SLV in which material the valves (E.85505) as lightened are. Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Swdl.{Len H. Swindell} | ||
