Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} BY/EM.1/GH.28.11.39. MATERIAL FOR FRAMES -------------------- 1010 With reference to your memo Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}9/MH.{M. Huckerby}25.11.39., we have considered the physical properties and analysis of the material already supplied for the above purpose, and also observe that in the next delivery our suppliers propose to push up the carbon contents to 2%. We would suggest that the present material being lower in carbon is ideal if any serious welding has to be done. The higher carbon material for future deliveries will be a little better for strength, and can be expected to give a tensile of 26/28 tons per square inch, against 23 for the lower carbon material. It is probable that the small gain in tensile of the higher carbon material is not sufficient to affect the performance of the frames. In any case, if any great amount of welding has to be done, there will be little, if any difference between the strengths of the two materials in the areas which have been welded. BY EM | ||
