To EH. from R.{Sir Henry Royce} Copy to CJ. ORIGINAL RECEIVED RE SHORT CONNECTING RODS FOR 40/50 H.P. CHASSIS. HE. I agree that for the immediate future we stick to our whitemetalled bronze bushes for connecting rod ends. Your arguments are quite true, and as a safe policy we fitted them originally, but as everyone seems to be using whitemetalled steel rods, and they make a lighter big end, we adopted them for our recent work. They can be made to work satisfactorily, and we ought to learn to produce them consistently and regularly. They should be O.K. for letting together with liner, and if run out should be returned to Works, new ones being kept in stock at Service station. It is understood that unless you can find a definite advantage as regards piston knocks in the shorter rods, we shall continue with the old standard length, and therefore the old standard pattern very slightly modified to reduce sudden stress changes.
