VISIT TO WORKS OF MESSRS LUCAS.

On 17.3.37. we paid a visit to the offices, and laboratory of Messrs Lucas, for the purpose of discussing various points in connection with regulators, horns, headlamps and the progress of the units being built by them for the Bentley chassis.

Regulators.

In connection with the L.R.7.T. type regulator, we submitted figures of regulating current, taken from the A.I. terminal at 13.0 regulator volts. This was 23 amps. and too high. This high value was confirmed by a current of about 4.5 amperes taken from A.{Mr Adams} terminal together with 1.5 amps. from A.1. terminal at 15.7 volts on the regulator. It was agreed that the setting of that particular regulator (No.2) was high.

We pointed out that the sparking output of the dynamo was 14 amperes, and in order to safeguard the machine the maximum current taken from it at 13 volts should not exceed the 18.0 amperes given in the specification for the existing CAV.B.2.CJ.I. regulator. We therefore regard the observations at 13 volts, with the whole of the output taken through the A.I. terminal, as a check on the ability of the regulator, to protect the dynamo. To this end, we asked for an extra turn to be wound on the second portion of the series winding. This was agreed to and one regulator so modified is to be sent to us.

It was also agreed that we should obtain figures on No.3. unit as a basis of comparison.

Horns.

In the discussion on horns we divided the troubles, experienced by us, into four kinds as follows:-

1. That due to the contraction and distortion of the base with cold.

2. That due to the contacts being out of adjustment.

3. That due to unclean, or bad contact of relay joints.

4. That due to trumpets through:- (a) Snow blocking the mouth. (b) Rain or mist collecting in the throat.
