Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} c.c. to DA.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} c.c. to BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} ORIGINAL Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/lml/LG5.12.28. 'SS{S. Smith}' BUMPER TEST. X & 772 This chassis has so far run 24 1/2 hrs. on the bumping rig. The failures so far have been :- (1) The internal levers of the front shock dampers failed after 6 1/2 hrs. They were replaced and again failed as shewn in the attached sketch. It will be remembered that we have broken the corresponding levers in the standard dampers on this rig but not on our road tests. We anticipate that the pressure velocity rise we are obtaining from the dynamic restrictions is increasing the load on these levers somewhat. Further tests will be carried out reducing the pressure velocity increase but using the same fixed loads as standard. (2) The small .250 dia. stud E.78163 holding down the radiator fractured after 6 hrs. (3) A front spring broke after 22 hrs. We think that the life would have been considerably greater had we not had to run without shock dampers though 22 hrs. is an average life. A second spring broke after 24 1/2 hrs. The axle, steering components, engine mounting, pivots, wheels, frame etc. are all undamaged. Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} | ||
