In view of these facts it is considered surprising that the back axle should have been knocked completely off the car and left 20 yds. behind the rest of the car.

(6) CWB. considered that from what he remembered of the impact he was astonished to see that the axle had been knocked completely off the car.

(7) No conclusions were arrived at as regards the cause of the car skidding - several suggestions were made which will be investigated when the remains of the car arrive at Derby.

(8) On the question of the steering, it was considered that once any car had got into a violent skid, the driver always feels that he would like the steering to be quick and solid. (CWB. is emphatic on this point.)

(9) I have questioned our drivers who drove this car during the 9,000 miles of experimental testing. The car was driven most of the time on wet roads with various conditions of tyres - they report that there was never any question of the car skidding, in fact, in their opinion, the car was much better on wet roads than any previous car they had driven in France under these conditions.

We are expecting the remains of the car at Derby in a few days. When this arrives we shall be able to examine several points but we consider it is very doubtful whether we shall ever find out the real cause of the car skidding.
