chambers showed no signs of wear, but in the O.S. damping cylinder there was a heavy mark on one side where the valve hat had been rubbing.

BALL END PINS.

These were highly polished where they had been in contact with the pads and showed a reduction in diameter near the lubrication holes of .0015". The N.S. showed a slight deposit of bronze and was just slightly scored.

GLANDS.

For the last 17 hrs. these were composed of spring loaded 6 ply tallowed asbestos rope packings containing 8 complete turns - fitted by production.
With this quality of rope the spring were choc-a-bloc and in addition the gland covers were distorted, leaving an average gap of .012" between the centre of the gland cover and the casing which resulted in a permanent set of .007 when the covers were eventually detached.
It was reported that these glands leaked as much as the 7 coil glands previously fitted, but the lows decreased the longer the dampers were run.

SUMMARY.

Contrasting these dampers with those of 18.G.IV. the remarkable difference between the conditions of the inter-lever sections of the rocking shafts can only be attributed to the fact that on the bump chassis the speed of axle movement was practically constant, also the oil was maintained at a high level, whereas 18.G.IV. was run for some time with the oil below working level. Consequently owing to lack of oil in the pressure cylinders, the road springs had free play until the volumetric piston displacement equalled the volumetric oil loss on each stroke, resulting in a violent force being applied to the inter lever.
