Nitro-hardened steel is promising great hope and improvement in both strength, and especially wear and condition of crankshaft bearings (main and big end), and we have enough confidence to ask for many more experimental shafts to put in engines to confirm the results. This is most urgent and valuable if we are to benefit from our knowledge and good position. The skin of this type of steel may not be tough. enough for highly concentrated loads on gears and similar parts. We think that from the bearing aspect the hardened shaft, with the economies of bearing area we have already adopted, should avoid, the necessity of lengthening the F.{Mr Friese} engine.
