To HPS{Horace Percy Smith - Experimental Factory Mgr} from Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/CTS.{C. Trot Salt - Carburation} c. HPS{Horace Percy Smith - Experimental Factory Mgr}/RH.{R. Hollingworth} Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/CTS.{C. Trot Salt - Carburation}1/ML.30.4.40. B.23 UNIT. ( O.H.C. CONVERSION. ) The above development unit has been stored at Shardlow for some months and, as is inevitable, certain pieces are missing. It is our intention to send this unit to Messrs Aspin of Bury, for conversion to their type of cylinder head and rotary valve. This job has a half interest for the Aero section, with whom we are co-operating, for the purpose of investigating the claims of the Aspin valve. We mention this fact so that you will appreciate that some urgency exists in getting the unit away to Bury. Further, this engine is particularly adaptable to such a test and we may be able to give a lead to the Aero section in regard to the claims made. We are therefore sending the unit into the Shop to be checked over and missing pieces replaced as we feel that although Aspin may not wish to run the engine in it's present form, (as we have complete records of it's performance, and will run it ourselves to compare the new adapted design) it is only fair to send a complete unit.
