To By.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} X306 Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}29/KW.18.11.35. For the first 50 Phantom III cars we have instructed aluminium hand brake shoes. It is really more important that the hand brake shoes should be in steel than the others, because if the hand brake is left on slightly with the shoe rubbing, as may easily happen, the aluminium shoe expands and seizes up solid. A design has now been issued for steel shoes and we are getting tests done as soon as possible. This note is merely to ask you to ensure that no more aluminium shoes are produced than are necessary to ensure continuity of output.
