20/25 HP.

15,000 Miles Car.

The detubulated cylinder head and ignition governor are now being run in France, and reports indicate that these improve the idling, which has been a point criticised by Sales. The roll rods to the design scheme will shortly be completed and will then be sent out to the car with low rating road springs. We are endeavouring to let the Testers have their holiday while the roll rod is being completed, so that the engine unit will not be worn out before the parts reach France.

Oil Consumption.

The complaint of cars taking a considerable period before settling down to a good oil consumption is receiving very serious attention. It is some satisfaction to know that they do appear to settle down. The 15,000 miles car has done so twice, and the two trials cars in service both appear now to have reasonable oil consumptions. We have to admit that apparently some of the earliest cars turned out seemed to be exceptionally bad for overoiling, because we have just investigated a case at Cricklewood where, owing to running in London traffic, the plugs got fouled up so rapidly that they would not last a day without being cleaned. A fast run on this car to check oil consumption entirely altered its condition, and although the oil consumption at the end of this period was not particularly good, the exhaust was quite free from smoke and the plugs perfectly dry.

An immediate solution would appear to be to run the cars a little further on test whilst we are completing our experiments. The question of how we have run into this oil consumption is somewhat involved, and can be discussed at the Conference next week.
