Contd. -7- dynamo charge switch in normal circumstances of running, but also as a nearly complete protector of the system against the results of high voltages which are inherent in the type of generator used. Exceptions to absolute completeness are comparatively small; the gain of protection over the system as at present standard is a very big one. Further comparing this arrangement of auto-switch with the Midgley type, it appears that the only thing which is really common to the two, is the use of the series coil in the lighting circuit, but even here there is a difference because whereas in the Midgley case this series coil carries the whole of the lighting current, we deliberately make this carry the head lamp current only, and thus secure more protection to the system than would otherwise be the case. In speaking above of the effect of a load on the system when the battery is xxxxx disconnected, we have supposed that this is not a head lamp load. In regard to the effect of the head lamp load on the operation of the system, this being a much bigger load than previously, also one which intentionally puts the auto switch out of action, we are reserving this for another report which will be issued shortly. We have asked Mr. Walker to look into the question as to what extent this proposed arrangement of auto-switch would avoid the Midgley patents. We have the following differences - contd. | ||
