PARAFFIN WAXED PAPER CONDENSERS OF REDUCED CAPACITY.

The advantage of lower capacity of ignition condenser as reported in our EFC3/ADL4.10.30 on the performance of tungsten contact points, appears to have been borne out by further experience only in so far as the good condition (e.g. freedom from oxidation) of the contact point surfaces is concerned.

A lower capacity condenser of capacity .246 mf. (not .264 mf. as reported in the general 10,000 mile test report on 18-GIV) (standard condenser capacity is .275 mf. to .325 mf) completed the 10,000 mile test on 20/25 chassis 18-GIV and the condenser and tungsten contact points were duly examined by ourselves. The condenser capacity was found to have slightly increased, an effect which is opposite to that taking place on varnished paper condensers whose capacities suffer decrease with age.

There is the possibility of reducing the current at break -- this, for the same energy of spark at break, means higher primary inductance and decreased speed of effective operation with the same make ratio. It may, however, be possible to rearrange the quantities to some extent to bring about a reduction of primary current at the instant of break. This is being considered. It has been noted that the primary inductances of the American coils De Jon and Delco Remy are a good deal greater than that of our own coil.
