TO <strikethrough>BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer}</strikethrough> FROM AJS. AJS1/M4.1.26. C. to <strikethrough>- E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer}</strikethrough> HS.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} <strikethrough>BY/RB{R. Bowen}</strikethrough> SEQUENCE STARTER. X8650 The following is a reply to your request in BY16/H291225., for a report on the condition of the units affecting sequence starter. (1) MOTOR. OK., as referred to by you. (2) REDUCTION GEAR OF 22 TO 1. This was sent you under cover of memo. AJS1/M301225. (3) MAIN CIRCUIT SWITCH. The drawing of this - LeC.2179. - was forwarded to you under cover of our memo. AJS1/M311225. (4) ACTUATING SOLENOID. We have received your print of modifications which you suggest for making solenoid suitable when the switch has been removed from this to the outside of flywheel casing as on LeC.2179. This matter is not quite so easy as indicated on your drawing, as R.{Sir Henry Royce} desires that we should make the solenoid in such a way that the iron core may be removed after taking off the rear bakelite cover, and so allow the pinion to be pushed into mesh by a small rod of any convenient material, in order to test the timing of switch on LeC. 2179. The incorporation of this feature means that (a) the elimination of nut on forward end of solenoid spindle as originally arranged so that armature can be withdrawn, (b) The supplying of a means of carrying the fibre washer for damping the shock after disengagement in some way which will prevent it dropping out, (c) the addition of some form of stop at rear of solenoid core to prevent this piece coming into contact with the rear bakelite cover, as R.{Sir Henry Royce} does not desire that this cover should be used as a stop. Modifications incorporating features (a) (b) & (c) will be ready we hope tomorrow. (5) STARTER SWITCH. This requires redesigning by us. (6) AUTOMATIC SWITCH. This requires slight modification which we shall let you have as soon as possible. The writer was not aware that the last 2 items were required from him, but as E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} is extremely busy he will let you have these at the earliest possible moment. AJS.
