X1129 Exptl. Dept. Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Ed.{J. L. Edwards}19/KW. 23rd June, 1936. Messrs. Rudge-Whitworth Ltd., Coventry. For the attention of Mr. Hack. Dear Sirs, Following on the Telephone conversation we had with you yesterday, with reference to the cost of machining the semi-hemispherical head castings, we are sending you a print of the modification required on this head, these being the fitting of a side plug and smaller exhaust valves. The fitting of this plug requires the cutting away of some of the finning, but we do not think that this will adversely affect the cooling to any great extent. Your views on this point, however, would be appreciated. Incidentally, we still require the central plug position, the side plug being an addition. Another point which has been manifesting itself ever since the beginning of this engine's career, and one which I believe was mentioned to you on the occasion of your visit here, is that of oil leakage from the left-hand side of the crankcase, which appears to cause a very severe loss of oil. It is possibly due to the oil splashed from the big end trickling down the sides of the crankcase, and being thrown into the bearings. Also, the absence of a sprocket may have quite a lot to do with it. We should be very glad, however, if you could help us to cure this trouble, and any suggestions as to a remedy would be appreciated. | ||
