{GRY{Shadwell Grylls} {Hdy.{William Hardy} x4094 To Er from Da.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} Da.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design}2/HP.17.10.34. c. Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} Ngr, Hdy{William Hardy} Marles Steering. I saw Mr Maltravers of the Adamant Engineering Co. and discussed the double-toothed Marles Steering with him. He says they have no examples, even of the small one available and the manufacture of some for tests would take a long time and be very expensive unless they were going to put it into production which is unlikely. They have not even a design of the larger type but if we will give them some limiting particulars, will prepare one in co-operation with ourselves. The suggestion then is that they should make the worm and roller which require special machining and special experience and we should make the remainder of the gear. Mr Maltravers is positive that the only advantage the double toothed gear has over the single tooth is cheapness of manufacture and that this is the sole reason for its adoption in America. Buicks in adopting it have modified the roller mounting so as to replace the needle roller journal bearing and plain thrusts by combined radial and thrust ball bearings and claim an efficiency of 90%, this being possible, they say, for use with independent suspension.
