VISIT OF RG.{Mr Rowledge} & HS.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} TO WW.
ON WEDNESDAY 21. INST.

We had a long discussion on various aero engine and chassis matters on Wednesday last.

I was pleased that RG.{Mr Rowledge} is less keen on superchargers, preferring a good plain sound engine with ample compression ratio, and a gate throttle. I think it would be utter waste of time to attempt making a third exhaust driven supercharger, before testing the two already in hand. I feel certain that in less than 12 months this exhaust driven type will be on the scrap heap, as I believe the gear driven type is much more practical, and I also believe that a supercharger will only be needed for very special work, because of the reasons pointed out and agreed to by RG.{Mr Rowledge}, especially referring to the increased petrol consumption.

I think that good progress is being made with Eagle 16. and Falcon X.

RG.{Mr Rowledge} also agrees with the views I gave with reference to names - i.e. that it would be better if they were replaced by simple RR. numbers.

We have been considerably delayed by providing for both double spark and single spark magnetos, and enclosing these to avoid wireless interference. It also handicaps the magneto maker as the wireless screening calls for a magneto having a greater sparking capacity. We do not believe the Americans are so handicapped in providing so many accessory features. They have to
