RE USE OF CHNS FOR
GLEASON BEVEL WHEELS.
As you are aware the manufacture of Gleason Helical Bevel Wheels for the Back Axle is in hand, and the E.N.V. Co. who are cutting the wheels for us have experienced considerable difficulty with the use of our standard material, which is Ubas. Our Pinion has always been made of CHNS and the standard practice of Messrs. ENV is to use CHNS for both pinion and wheel. We have therefore asked Mr. Royce if he would agree to the use of CHNS for the wheel in lieu of Ubas in order to help Messrs. E.N.V in their production. He replies in accordance with the attached note, R2/G11/2/20, copy of which I understand was sent to you. Owing to the urgency of this matter some two or three weeks ago when we raised this matter, we took immediate action to put in hand 50 blanks, 20 sets of which will be cut and tried out. Our view of this change of material is that it is almost entirely a matter of trying proving out this material as being satisfactory in overcoming the manufacturing difficulties, and providing Mr. Wormald is satisfied by obtaining satisfactory wheels manufactured by the E.N.V. Co. from the samples above referred to, we think this change of material should be standardised forthwith and we do not think that it is necessary to run these wheels 10,000 miles before they are used on standard delivery cars as we have run pinions in the same material as standard for years.
Enc.
Will you kindly give your assent to this change of material for standard.
