There is no doubt that with the present suspension all our exhaust systems tend to squeak. On the Quarterly Complaint list there are 96 complaints of noise from the exhaust system which is described as rattle, but we think that frequently this may be squeak. We are particularly anxious to avoid squeak from the exhaust system mounting on independently sprung cars, because noises of this nature spoil the impression of good riding. Experimentally we much prefer the simpler rubber mounting adopted by Packard & Chevrolet and run for a long time on B-23-AS, our own experimental car. We think the existing suspension must always squeak because we cannot lubricate them for fear of oil dropping on the exhaust system.
