on the governor lever shaft. The advantage given by this alteration is not evident at low speeds, but is a decided improvement at the higher speeds.
Fig. IV. indicates the conditions obtained by fitting ball bearings to the governor shaft only. The improvement obtained is very slight, not as much as is obtained when fitted in addition to roller throttle bearings.
The use of roller bearings on the throttle and ball bearings on the governor lever will be a greatly appreciated improvement both as regards more sensitive throttle control and reduction in the possibility of explosions in the silencer.
The diagram given for the lag in a standard system (fig.l.) represents a new car in which great care had been taken to ensure that everything was working as easily as possible, i.e. it had the least lag obtainable. During service this becomes larger due to increase of friction in the throttle spindle, lack of lubrication of connecting link ball ends etc. and the governor action is almost completely negatived. The roller bearing throttle, while commencing with much less lag, will maintain its degree of efficiency during service longer than the standard governor.
The roller bearing throttle alteration has been combined with an alteration to the throttle angle to reduce the possibility of sticking in the closed position.
It is recommended that both the roller bearing throttle and ball bearing governor shaft be fitted to all new cars, and
