RE PINNING OF VALVE TAPPETS. --------------------------------- & We cannot expect better work than we have been having in the past. It is imperative that we have silent valves as well as silent pistons if we want to get a quiet engine. I understood that both Mr. Platford and Mr. Hives wished for pinned tappets. I have lately come to the conclusion that they are worth the trouble. I want you therefore to kindly fit them to the next chassis which goes on 10,000 miles test. By removing the clearance from our present quiet valves we can obtain/valves without risk, and since it is so important for us to avoid such slight noises that occur from a detectable piston knock, it is also equally important that weavoid from a valve tappet. I would like to point out that our valve mechanism, when properly adjusted, remains in good condition a long time owing to the absence of wear. It is a pity therefore for it to be incapable of perfect adjustment through the tappet revolving and being somewhat out of truth. R.{Sir Henry Royce} | ||
