c. Mr Hives. c. Mr. c. Eng. c. Hs. {Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} c. Mr.Shelton. X87961 BY9/H. 9.3.25. March 9th, 1925. Monday. Messrs North & Sons, Ltd. Whippendell Road, Watford. Dear Sirs, E.O.S. WATFORD MAGNETO. X4181d Referring to your recent letter on the above subject, in reply to our Mr. Whitehead's letter in which he asked whether it would not be possible to reduce the amount of force necessary to operate the advance lever on your Type E.O.S. Magneto, we have received a reply through our Mr. Whitehead in which you point out that the two matters we are discussing, namely, noise due to the flopping of the sleeve, and less difficulty of operation of the lever, are incompatible. I would respectfully point out that this does not appear to me to be necessarily the case unless you have some further information of which I am not cognisant. As I understand the issue, it has two phases:- 1. The force necessary to operate the sleeve. This depends, as I have understood it up to the moment, at any rate, upon pressure exerted axially, i.e. on the end of the sleeve, and has nothing to do with the fit of the sleeve in its bearings. 2. Absence of slackness to the amount necessary to prevent the flopping action of the armature sleeve. One does not see quite how the sleeve itself could make a noise unless it were diametrically slack in its housings or on the other hand, insufficiently stiff to resist the pull of the magnetic flux.
