20 HP. CHASSIS UNDERSHIELD.
X.3524
We have already sent you a drawing shewing a change-over from tubular to the channel type on the 2nd. cross member for the purpose of making a convenient job of the undershield. We now send you drawing LeC.1072 illustrating most of the details of the undershield.
It is intended that the undershield should be taken down as a unit by merely detaching the nine fixing nuts on each side channel of the frame, and the fixings to the second and third cross members.
S.D. It will be found, however, that after these fixings have been removed, the undershield when dropped vertically, cannot be immediately removed owing to the presence of the front springs. The undershield is then intended to be pulled over sideways until it drops clear of one of the springs. It may then be engaged from the other by a reverse movement, and withdrawn from underneath the car.
The slots which clear the front spring shackles, and also the clearance between the undershield and the engine should be made large enough to make these disengaging operations possible. The latter clearance can be settled when the shape of the crankcase is more definitely known.
In connection with the fixings on the third cross member, we have shewn a stud passing through the engine bearer bracket. This piece of design, however, has not been viewed by Mr. Royce, and it is therefore given on LeC.1072 (Contd.)
