1339. -> S/W.....Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} c. to Sg.{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD} c. to Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} C4/C21.4.39 Re TYRES. Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}4/R1.4.39. I note contents of your memo. With regard to the last paragraph, we can find nothing in the previous correspondence which says that these tyres are lighter, better non-skids, more silent and considerably cheaper, otherwise naturally these points would have been taken into consideration before we replied to your previous memo. We now understand that the Avon 4-ply tyre is a superior tyre to the Dunlop or the India and the difference in cost to us is £1. 7. 0. for the Avon as compared with £1.11. 1. for the 6-ply India - a saving of 4/1d per tyre. So long as you are quite satisfied of their superiority and of there being a reasonable possibility of getting service and replacements by customers, and also on the assumption that there is nothing peculiar about the wheels which precludes tyres other than Avons being fitted, we will agree to your going ahead with the Avon tyres.
