Mr. Claude Johnson,
Managing Director.
Rolls-Royce Ltd.,
London, England.

Attention: Mr. F. {Mr Friese} H. {Arthur M. Hanbury - Head Complaints} Royce.

Dear Sir:-

X.2515. Re: Electrical Installation on R.R. Chassis.

In reply to Mr. Royce's letter R8/G10.9.20, in which he refers to the fuse on the cutout circuit of the Smith dynamo, which he thinks is not a perfectly reliable protection for the dynamo:

On American constant current generators, fuses are often used in this position, but since they are the standard American type of cylindrical fuse in a glass case and can be purchased at any garage, no difficulty is met with in replacing them.

The horns which grip the cylindrical fuse are not easily adaptable to gripping a copper wire: therefore these fuses are generally in fairly good condition, although cases are found where the generator has been burned out, due to the use of a piece of copper wire instead of the proper fuse.

We believe that a magnetic circuit breaker is used in certain outfits, but have not yet ascertained who is the maker.

X.4200. As suggesting to Mr. Royce another possibility, we are sending under separate cover a sample switch box made by the Connecticut Telephone & Electric Company, which contains a thermostatic cutout for the battery ignition, a device of very simple design which works very well we understand. This outfit is of the very cheapest type for Overland cars, and the details of the construction are not all that could be desired.

I have an older model of this device on my Overland car and it works excellently. It effectively prevents the battery being run down if the engine is stopped with the ignition switch on. The cutout is being shipped direct to Mr. Royce.

MQ/G.

Very truly yours,
ROLLS-ROYCE OF AMERICA In.c
