(3) Phantom (EAC. engine).

The first EAE. engine was completed at the end of Sept. 1923. At that time it was intended that this engine should be brought in simultaneously with the EAC.1. chassis which was practically a complete new chassis using semi elliptic springs similar to those on the SS.{S. Smith} An EAC. was temporarily fitted to a Silver Ghost car and run on the road in Oct. 1923. A further Silver Ghost was fitted with an EAC. engine and the original form of 4-wheel brakes with high speed servo and taken to France by PN.{Mr Northey} in Feb.1924.

In considering the progress of the EAC. in 1924 we have got to bear in mind that most of this year was occupied in the intensive development of F.W.B. which had been announced to the public before any brakes designs had been got out. The adopted scheme of brakes did not start the 10,000 miles test until early June 1924. After that was completed we went through a whole series of tests owing to the complaint that the stiffer springs which were adopted spoilt the riding of the car. This meant further tests in France which were not completed until the end of Nov.1924.

the programme as regards the introduction of the EAC. engine and a new chassis was altered many times [handwritten: to introduce it as a sports chassis] during this year. The original proposal which was to make [handwritten: To introduce it as a Sports Chassis] EAC.1. was scrapped and a further proposal was put forward. This meant building EAC.11. which was similar to the present Phantom except that it had a wider frame, deeper radiator and several other chassis alterations with the EAC. engine and sequence type starter.
