contd :- -4- A dummy chassis of this type was sent to Barkers and a sports body was fitted to it and it was inspected by Sales. In the meantime R.{Sir Henry Royce} had designed EAC.IV. which was a unit con-struction of engine and gearbox on which it was proposed to have a 3-speed box. There was further controversy on this point and the scheme was dropped. The scheme of producing EAC. as a sports car was also cancelled in Nov.1924, and the present Phantom which was applying EAC. engine to the standard chassis was agreed upon. It was not until early 1925 that the specifica-tion for the Phantom car which we were going to produce was agreed upon. finally settled. The first 'V' series chassis was rushed out to France for a 10,000 miles test on the 15th.Feb.1925. This car (98-NK) was known to have fitted to it certain parts which were not going to be used on production. A further car (93-NK) went to France on the 4th.April 1925 and the 10,000 miles test on this car was completed on the 3rd. May 1925. Material and work was put in hand for the Phantom at the same time as the experimental chassis was being made, i.e., early in January. CJ. telegraphed WOR.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} from Deal : 15.1.25 WOR.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} make 150 'V' series without subframe then 150 'V' series with subframe". Therefore the instruction to proceed was given before we had made an experimental car of the 'V' series type. The first production 'V' series chassis was put on test in June 1925. Previous to that however a number of Silver Ghost Trials cars had been converted into contd :- | ||
