20 HP. CHASSIS. SIDE STEERING TUBE.
---------------------

Referring to Da{Bernard Day - Chassis Design}2/M.{Mr Moon / Mr Moore} 17.12.26. we do not see any reason in the first place why it should be necessary to change the scheme which we are introducing for the last 100 in "J" Series. The whole reason for bringing this in was, it was a scheme which had been tried out and could be relied upon, and had satisfied customers who had previously been thoroughly disgruntled with the steering.

We are testing out your new scheme as arranged originally, and if and when this is agreed to by the Experimental Dept. and standardized we shall certainly bring it in at the earliest possible moment, but we cannot see our way at this late stage of the proceedings to make any changes, as "J" Series is actually being manufactured at the moment, and we have only a very short space of time between now and the fitting of the improved side steering tubes to chassis.

Apart from the question that the new combination demands a certain amount of running at least before it can be agreed to, it involves the production of new tools and new pieces, and there is not sufficient time available for this to be accomplished.

We would like to confirm that we are of course introducing the stronger tube for which I asked and obtained R's consent for all chassis in parallel with the other improvement.

The improvement so far as the springs themselves in the side steering tube are concerned, has been standardized for the last 50 in "J" Series for months. What we have done is to bring the improvement 50 chassis forward without introducing the low speed steering worm.
