SIDE STEERING TUBE. ******************* With reference to the question of replacement work for the above on chassis delivered, the position is as follows:- 1. We must produce a further 100 in accordance with the scheme used on "J" Series from 101 to 150, using the side steering tubes F.54762, with the ball pads and springs the same as those on the type quoted for the chassis in question. 2. For the balance of cars fitted with FWB, that is, from 31 in "F" to the end of "H", we should order up material to cover N.Scheme 2308, but for the present leave the question of the strength of the spring open. 3. Cars without four wheel brakes. We should order 500 sets of material, side steering tube, ends, and pads, using the strengthened tube 1.187 outside diameter, .093 thick. In regard to the springs, Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} will give us a range of three. When we obtain this information from him we should order up a gross of each type of spring. This would cover 72 cars, and would save time by enabling us immediately a decision has been arrived at, to fit up parts and get them away to cars which have been in service a long time. The chassis which are most important and which will be dealt with away, will be those delivered during the first year. After that period, side steering tubes can be changed as cars become available at Depots or the Works, as the danger of fracture is a fatigue effect and from experience we know that trouble will not develop until approximately three years have elapsed in service.
