X41156 BY. {R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} Hs. {Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} e-to-H. {Arthur M. Hanbury - Head Complaints} Hm {Capt. W. Hallam - Head Repairs} /NRC {N. R. Chandler} 6/D28.8.26. Re Chassis No.GRK-75. - R. {Sir Henry Royce} Tadcastle Esq. Chassis delivered Sept.1924. Bt. {Capt. J. S. Burt - Engineer} recently visited the above owner in Argyllshire, and owner complained of bouncing and instability at the back. We informed Bt. {Capt. J. S. Burt - Engineer} that so far as we could see from the buffer clearances he gave us, the poundage of the springs appeared to be entirely satisfactory, and we asked if he could give us any further information to enable us to diagnose the nature of the complaint. The following is copy of a reply we have received from H :- "With reference to your Hm {Capt. W. Hallam - Head Repairs} /NRC {N. R. Chandler} 16/D19.8.26., about the springing of this car, please note that Bt. {Capt. J. S. Burt - Engineer} now reports as follows :- "I feel what is required is more damping and owner could quickly be satisfied if Hartfords were fitted as these could be adjusted to the special conditions. Is it permissible to make such an alteration in view of the fact that the circumstances are exceptional and the riding of the 40/50 which has Hartfords is considered satisfactory?" BJ. now wishes to have the views of BY. {R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} and Hs. {Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} on the question as to whether they suggest Hartford shock absorbers can be fitted to a 20-HP. or what alteration they propose. Will you please put the matter before them and let him know." We would be glad to have your remarks. Our own suggestion is that we should ask owner to return the present shock absorbers for us to fit an additional plate and bring them up to maximum poundage, because we know that the rear shock absorbers frequently get low in poundage after a couple of years' running.
