RE GOSHAWK II - REAR UNIVERSAL JOINT.

We send herewith a blue print of "N" Scheme 738 shewing the rear universal joint developed from LeC.1334.

The pinion shaft, in this case, is more highly stressed than the propeller shaft, as is shewn by the moduli of the section, but as the propeller shaft is liable to whirl, it will probably be considered that it ought to be stronger.

We have shewn a set screw for retaining the rear roller bearing housing, but we are not sure that this is the best thing, and it might be preferred to run right through, and use a bolt with a castle nut at the forward end.

On "N" Scheme 716 we omitted to shew the way in which we proposed to hold this race on, and we are accordingly sending a further print of this drawing shewing what we had intended, namely, that the race should be secured by a collar located by a taper pin, in case this method may be of any interest.

We are re-drawing this bevel pinion and bearings on a full scale arrangement of the back axle casing, which we shall be sending in the course of a few days.

With regard to the front gland nut, we have followed the LeC on one side of the drawing, and on the other have shewn a proposal for preventing oil passing out through the threads.
