V.{VIENNA} 4254 R.R. 235A (100 T) (S.H. 798. 10-12-20) G.{Mr Griffiths - Chief Accountant / Mr Gnapp} 2947 To Da.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} from E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} c. to CJ. c. to Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} c. to Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} c. to Ey. c. to EFC. X 4254 RE REAR UNIVERSAL - "GOSHAWK" II. With reference to N. Scheme 738, the possibility of the oil oozing out via the thread of the bearing retaining nut has been brought about by the adoption of Fig.7 N.scheme 698. To do away with this trouble Mr. Royce would prefer to go back to the use of a nut on the inner end of the housing. This will mean, of course, increasing the size of the flange on the axle casing and bevel pinion housing. To this latter point Mr. Royce has no objection, as he thinks the present attachment is, if anything, on the weak side. The interior arrangement of ball bearings, thrust washer, and distance pieces should not be altered, but the outer end of the casingwill now be blind, and to save a feature in the machining, and also to provide an undercut for grinding the bore etc. the end should be extended a little, and made square to include the oil retaining compartment, as in sketch - Contd. | ||
