insulation of the main brush-holders. When this was removed, the insulation was quite O.K.
The machine was then given a short run on the bench when it appeared to excite and charge in a normal manner, but accompanied by a loud clicking noise of the brushes, and severe flashing at the positive brushes.
From an examination of the machine it was found that the positive brushes were excessively worn and rather sluggish in the holders. Also two uneven patches had been worn on the commutator as the result of the flashing at the brushes, while the solder at some of the end connections had melted.
The armature was removed and tested, when it was found that there was a break in the winding. It was also observed that the armature had been fouling the main brush terminal links with the result that some of the coil ends, where they drop down from the slots to the commutator, had been badly cut.
