(7) LAMPS.

Never attempt to run any portion of the electrical apparatus on the chassis by current generated by the dynamo without a battery in position on the chassis and properly connected up to the system. Although the dynamo itself is protected by its field fuse on the Lucas switchbox, from the over voltage which is set up under these conditions, it is possible for the lamps, if these are switched on, to be burnt out before this fuse has had time to cause the dynamo to become disexcited.

(8) MAIN SWITCH.

The main switch is very carefully adjusted before sending out so that the carbon contacts make contact before, and break contact after, the copper contacts. Therefore any flashing occurring during switching off should occur at the carbons and these will very gradually become burnt away. The switch should never be allowed to get into a condition in which flashing takes place on the copper contacts. To this end the carbon contacts can very easily be replaced by the spares provided.

The switch may be inspected by removing the switch cover and pushing switch into contact by hand. The force should be applied, not to the top lever, but to the main lever carrying the copper contact, and this will cause the motor to start, but the motor will not be put into gear. Do not hold switch on long enough to allow the motor to race.
