Sparking plug and magneto tests on chassis 214.AMS.

REPORT ON SPARKING PLUG TESTS.

Further to my report on 23.5.32. the magneto off 25-EX was fitted to chassis 214.AMS, with the following results -

Lodge CH.3. - No misfires.
K.L.G. K.b. - No misfires.

The next tests were carried out with 3 magnetos borrowed from production and tested on 214-AMS.

Magneto No. 130543 - Point Gap .008" (as supplied from Works).

This magneto was no better than the one removed from 214.AMS (No. 126900).

The gap was then set to .012" and there was a slight improvement, but it still remained poor. - Tested 25.5.32.

Magneto No. 130541 - Point gap set to .012"

Quite a good magneto compared with No's: 130543 & 126900.

No misfires at slow speeds and only occasional misfires picking up. - Tested 26.5.32.

Magneto No. 130540. - Point gap set to .012"

Same result as Magneto No. 130543. - Tested 26.5.32.

These magnetos were then handed to Mr. West for testing their output, and he reports that their performance is not up to our specification, and he is taking the matter up with By, therefore, until we can get hold of a magneto that is giving a specified R.R. performance we cannot condemn sparking plugs. We are trying to obtain a magneto from Mr. West that will give us a 100% performance at slow speeds and picking up irrespective of its high speed performance, and will report on same as soon as tested.
