RE INSTRUCTION BOOK.

With reference to Rl/G8/1/20 dealing with the proposed Appendix to the Instruction Book for the electrical equipment, we think we should have done more work on this before sending it to you, and arrangements have been made whereby more care is exercised in sending you material which has not been fully reviewed by the Staff at Derby. On going over this Appendix with Mr. Clarke and Mr. Walker we have come to the conclusion that considerable modifications are desirable both in the arrangement of the matter and in the matter itself:-

We think it is desirable to give a general description of the whole of the equipment which can be read at leisure as a matter of interest, followed by running instructions and the tracing and correction of faults. We think it is impossible to avoid the Appendix being lengthy for although the material put forward can, we think be cut down, yet we find additional material which ought to be included. The whole of the electrical equipment as it stands is extensive and also complicated and I do not think we can pretend that it is not, or that its proper care can be provided for without effectively covering the ground in the description of and instructions for, the running of this equipment. we think that, as you point out, the great danger of long descriptions is that they do not get read, but we hope that this risk will be avoided by separating the material so that it can be readily referred to and absorbed. An important fault with the present Appendix is that running instructions are mixed up with the general description and we propose to avoid this in re-
