Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Swdl.{Len H. Swindell}5/AP. September 13th 1937 1020. Mr.P.Berthon, E.R.A.Ltd., BOURNE, LINCS Dear Sir, In accordance with our letter of the 11th ult., two rings of bearing material have been sent you in the part machined state, suitable for machining to the final detail dimensions of your centre main bearing (E.10147). Together with the two rings, four shims have been sent for fitting between the two half bearings to ensure location and prevent the possibility of rotation. We think that the grooves by which the bearing studs pass should locate the end play providing the grooves are a good fit on the studs. The fitting of these bearings should be carried out in precisely the same manner as for the big end bearings as explained in our letter of 8.8.37 and adhering to all the details therein with the exception of the diametrical clearance on the crankshaft which in this case should be between the limits of .005 and .006. We should be interested to hear what results you have obtained from the big end bearings supplied to you on 11.8.37 if you have yet carried out any test with them. Yours faithfully, FOR ROLLS-ROYCE LTD. | ||
