X4021 HORT C. Br.{T. E. Bellringer - Repair Manager} R.{Sir Henry Royce} (Hold over). Her. He. EW. Hy.{Tom Haldenby - Plant Engineer} EFC. ET PROGRESS REPORT. F.{Mr Friese} ENGINE TYPE TEST. ENGINE NO. F.XIV.MS. 39. The third 10 hour run on the hangar was completed yesterday. Amount of running to date - 20 hrs. on test bed, 30 hrs. on hangar, total time 50 hrs. Particulars of hangar test and H.P. maintained, similar as first 10 hr. test, see EP{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer}2/H25.2.30. Last 5 minutes of run at 525 HP. corrected (per boost pressure) revs. obtained, 2395. Consumptions - Petrol for last 10 hrs. .514 pts. per HP. hr. Average from start .534 pts. per HP. hr. Oil for last 10 hrs. 5.7 pts. per Hr. Average from start 5.3 pts. pr Hr. Freezing up trouble more evident than previous day. When opening up throttle for the last 5 minutes run at the specified rated power, i.e + 3.32 boost, it was found that this boost pressure could not be obtained, even when running at full throttle, the engine was allowed to run for 3 mins. in this condition but did not clear itself, and it was only after slamming the throttle on to the stops that it became clear and the correct boost of 3.32 at the reduced throttle opening was then obtained. The question of cowling in the engine has been discussed and considered impracticable and inadvisable, and we have no suitable pusher propellor for this test; the whole of the hangar test will be run with tractor propellor (agreed by the A.I.D.) On the test bed we were able to have some control over the air temperature. No valve spring breakages. Magnetos - no further adjustments required to make and break points. CONTD:- | ||
