W/P - Sr. Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}5/R.21.3.39. re: Replacement of Parts at Company's Expense. 1565 We note that in report No.P.186 - Baronne de Zuylen, the rear silencer was replaced on a 50% basis after the car had been in the customer's hands three years and three months. The exhaust system on the average competitor's car, either English or American, which we have in the Experimental Dept., has a life of about one year. This is because, owing to the exacting conditions of heat and corrosion under which it functions, an exhaust system becomes exceedingly costly and heavy if it is made to last for an appreciably greater period. We do not consider it reasonable for the customer to expect the Company to pay half the cost of fitting a new silencer after he has had over three years' service from the old one.
