COPY. S/W. ---- Bs{A J. Barnes - Assistant Manager}4/CM3.6.21. dictated 2.6.21. ---- RE:- DUNLOP STRAIGHT SIDED TYRES. -------------------------------- Wd{Mr Wood/Mr Whitehead}12/NJ1.6.21. - The Dunlop Company have also approached us with regard to our adopting the straight sided tyres in future as the standard equipment. In this connection, we have already written to you asking whether you could recommend this course, and placing before you the various advantages which Dunlops claim for this type of tyre. We agree that before any action is taken it would be necessary for the Experimental Department to thoroughly test a set of these tyres and it is noted that you have arranged with the Dunlop Company to supply a set for this purpose. In the circumstances, we think that no further action should be taken until Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} is able to place the result of his tests before R.{Sir Henry Royce} and C.J., with a view to a decision being given to standardise these tyres. Of course, it not only affects tyres, but as we understand it, the question of wheels is also affected, as it will be necessary in such a case to adopt a standard wheel with a detachable flange, which is rather a big departure and would have to be most carefully enquired into before this adoption could be recommended.
