X6115 To Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} from G.W.H. Hotel de France, Chateauroux, FRANCE. 23/11/31. 18.G.IV. LUCAS WINDSCREEN WIPER. The failure of the Lucas wiper has been caused by the two driving pieces of the blade working loose on the driving shaft. The screw marked A, has worked loose allowing the serrations which take the drive at the bottom of the piece marked B, to become chafed destroying the serrations. To prevent this all that is required is a spring washer under the screw A, to prevent it working loose. We have fitted these to the two wipers and cured them from working loose. The other feature we complain of is the inefficiency of the wipers above 50 m.p.h. The wipers at this speed and above are actually not in contact with the glass, due to the wind pressure passing along the face of the windscreen. We find that the load of the wipers on the glass is very light, the actual pressure being applied at the centre is 1.4 ozs. The Wiper otherwise is quiet and appears to be a good job. G.W.H Hancock.
