We thank you for your letter C16/024.4.30 with enclosure from Capt. Bowman. We gather from his letter that the India Tyre Co., are suggesting supplying covers and tubes in balanced pairs, i.e. they propose to bring their bad covers into balance by making bad tubes and using the out of balance of the tube to deal with the out of balance of the cover. We are afraid that this is a procedure which we cannot tolerate and in fact have always strongly disagreed with. The obvious reason is that if ever a tyre and tube are dismounted by a chauffeur, it is certain that he will never put them up in the correct relative position to obtain balance. Apart from this, if a cover is 1 1/4 lbs. out of balance, it is due to there being more rubber in one part of the tread than another consequently the tyre is not equally resilient all round. The effect of this is that though the tyre may be balanced statically it gives a poor steering on the road. We have gone over all these points with Messrs. Dunlops' and they are at the present moment consistently manufacturing covers to within 67 ins. ozs. out of balance | ||
