X4612. To Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} c. to Wsr. c. to BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} c. to Mr Walker. Iron Fndry. HLL/AG.5.7.32. Laboratory. RE - SPECIAL BRAKE DRUMS. The set of drums which were and being tested in service were made as near as possible in composition to those produced by Lake and Elliot. It was found however, that it was impossible to get the total carbon as low as in their iron i.e. 2.7% owing to our conditions of melting. The tensile strength of our material is also, in all probability, lower, though we have not yet a suitable bar of theirs for test. In view of this it does not appear desirable to make any more castings for the time being. RECEIVED 1932 JUL 5 HL. HE | ||
