RE DIFFERENTIAL
(Andrade)

Here is some further correspondence from Andrade, whom I just missed seeing in New York.

You remember that we proposed to try this device 18 months ago and never got to it.

It is really too big a job for us to tackle. Hives should do it but he does not habitually run up against the necessity of this improved type of differential (lacking generally our ice and mud conditions.)

I believe Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} would agree to try out a differential of this type and that Andrade could be persuaded to make one for us at moderate cost. However it should be made to suit the latest ideas in rear axles.

Possibly By.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} would make a layout of the differential, working from the attached print and scaling up, and would let you have it to bring back and have a sample made up by Andrade to send to England for test.

They could test it under all imaginable conditions by making artificial mud conditions, or driving across plowed fields.

They would probably find it gave increased speed and less tire wear in high speed work such as they do on Brooklands or in France.

All reports point to it as being really successful and close to adoption by some makers ( I am not sure who but suspect Gen. Motors and Chrysler.)

Very truly yours,
