" " Da{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} " " HS{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} " " H.Cr.{Mr Cra???ster / Mr Chichester} LIB.1/EBN10.2.23 TECHNICAL COACHWORK CONFERENCE I am forwarding for your information, the following extracts of Notes made at the recent Conference meetings with various first class coachbuilders' technical staff - the names of the several coachbuilders have purposely been omitted by desire - (1) It was suggested by a coachbuilder that a pair of extra brackets for fitting to the chassis frame (20 h.p.) for extra support to the body, where the main doors come, should be supplied for the coachbuilders to fit when they considered necessary. Sp.{Mr Spinney} was asked to enquire from the Works about this. (2) A coachbuilder preferred mounting bodies on over-hanging side brackets such as the 20 R-R than on top of long side members such as the 40/50 R-R.{Sir Henry Royce} (3) All agreed that the R-R and scuttle attachment requires improving. (4) A coachbuilder said he preferred mounting bodies on brackets fixed to the side members of the chassis frame rather than mounting bodies on top of the side members, and he considered the former method was a saving in weight. (5) He mentioned that the front wing stays for the 20 h.p. were found to be strong enough, and to save a great deal of weight. (6) A coachbuilder considered it would be a good thing to use an improved supplementary frame on which to mount the body. (7) A coachbuilder emphasised the fact that luggage cannot be carried on bodies having leather roofs, and therefore it would be necessary to carry luggage at the rear position, where on the 20 h.p. it is desired to carry the spare wheels, in as many cases as possible. (8) A coachbuilder said that the R-R long bolts (for bolting the body to the chassis) were of no advantage to the body, and they did not use them at his Works. Sp.{Mr Spinney} was requested to write and enquire from Derby as to the object in fitting these bolts. (9) A coachbuilder said fitting rubber between the bodywork and the chassis would mean having to make the bodies much stronger, and that his Firm did not fit any separating | ||
